Mensinga pessary
The gynaecologist Dr Mensinga invented the so-called pessary or occlusive pessary. The intention was to cover the cervix with a larger rubber membrane, preventing sperm from travelling up into the womb.
The pessary developed by Dr Mensinga was about the size of the palm of one’s hand, and was inserted into the posterior vaginal arch. However, in this position, it was very susceptible to slipping out of place, which is why the diaphragm that is still used today was subsequently developed.
